Euronews: O2 UK Shuts Its Mobile Wallet

Also in today's EMEA regional roundup: 4G's flying in France; Telkom wields the jobs axe; smartphones, tablets boost online shopping.

  • Telefónica UK Ltd. (O2) is to close its "mobile wallet" smartphone-based payments system, from March 31. O2 was one of the first to enter the mobile wallet fray when it launched the service 18 months ago in combination with Visa and others, but, as it says in a statement on its website, "Since then lots has changed for us, the market and our customers. So, we've decided to close the O2 Wallet to give us time to look into new and better ways to help people manage their money on the move, both in the UK and abroad." (See O2 Names Mobile Wallet Partners.)

    • 4G whizz! Earlier this week UK operator EE announced that it had surpassed the 2 million mark in terms of 4G customers, and now, according to a Reuters report, it seems the French are mad for 4G too, with Orange (NYSE: FTE), SFR , and Bouygues Telecom all claiming to have 1 million punters signed up to their respective 4G services. Cut-price rival Free Mobile , however, remained coy about its 4G numbers. (See Euronews: EE Hits 2M Mark With 4G, Free Disrupts French Mobile Market.)

    • South Africa's Telkom SA Ltd. (NYSE/Johannesburg: TKG) is planning to fire up to 1,000 managers and an unspecified number of lower-level workers as part of cost-cutting measures instigated by CEO Sipho Maseko, reports Bloomberg. Apparently, free bottled water and Christmas parties for employees are also on the kill list.

    • The growing influence of smartphones and tablets has been clearly demonstrated in figures produced by the British Retail Consortium, which found a year-on-year 19.2% increase in December online shopping purchases in the UK, reports the BBC. Considering this Interweb shopping thing has been around for some time now, that's a heck of a rise.

Assistant Editor, Europe, Light Reading

Paul is based on the Isle of Wight, a rocky outcrop off the English coast that is home only to a colony of technology journalists and several thousand puffins.

He has worked as a writer and copy editor since the age of William Caxton, covering the design industry, D-list celebs, tourism and much, much more.

During the noughties Paul took time out from his page proofs and marker pens to run a small hotel with his other half in the wilds of Exmoor. There he developed a range of skills including carrying cooked breakfasts, lying to unwanted guests and stopping leaks with old towels.

Now back, slightly befuddled, in the world of online journalism, Paul is thoroughly engaged with the modern world, regularly firing up his VHS video recorder and accidentally sending text messages to strangers using a chipped Nokia feature phone.
