Mulling what ever-more extensive fitness monitoring and labor-saving devices might mean in the future.

CES 2014: The Internet of (Fat) Things?

Anyone else spot the dichotomy at the heart of some of the device and technology trends at CES last week?

Everyone and his dog now has -- or is planning to deliver -- a wearable mobile fitness device. These gizmos are getting more sophisticated in the type and amount of data they can collect about a wearer.

Meanwhile, however, I saw profusion of labor-saving robots on the show; everything from window-cleaning bots to one that rocked a baby's cradle. And some people buzzed around the halls on Segways or electric scooters, perhaps regretting the fact that they can't yet get Uber service in Vegas. (See CES 2014: Do Robots Dream of Electric Scooters?.)

You see where I'm heading with this, right?

Assuming you have enough money to pay for it, which is obviously a big assumption, technology is rapidly making it easier and easier for you never to have to lift a finger to do everyday menial tasks, or, you know, walk places and stuff.

Yet, your levels of health and fitness are increasingly easy for mobile technology to monitor and results could -- potentially -- have more influence on your lifestyle choices, and maybe even medical treatment in the future.

Oh well, good news for your friendly local gym, I suppose.

FitBits
I got a FitBit and a Kindle for Christmas, so I understand the dichotomy. So far, the Kindle is winning my time and attention. And, I got the whole family FitBit Forces, which is apparently the best fitness tracker out there right now, and I think they're all returning it. It's nice in theory, but not something you need every day, once you understand how to acheive your goals (or give up on them).

If it's taught me anything, it's that I will NOT be buying smartwatches for them next year.

Sure, I'm just going to need some personal data first, then I can guide you. ;-)

Help us, Dan
We -- and I mean we the species -- need firm guidance for surviving in the post-human era. Which combination of digital technologies will allow us to continue to exist as reasonably free beings? Which should we avoid to at least delay complete subjugation to the robot overlords? If no one can truly be OFF the grid, is there a way to at least be less ON the grid? Our time cries out for such guidance. I think you're the man for the job.
