Could Russia Block Mobile Phone Imports?

1:15 PM -- Hold on to your britches... This could be a bumpy ride for the world's mobile device manufacturers, and for Russian consumers.

According to a report from Reuters, Russia is considering imposing an import restriction on mobile devices that could leave the country's 180 million-plus mobile users with only a handful of locally produced handsets from which to choose.

That's because the Russian government wants to promote the locally developed positioning technology, GLONASS, over the GPS system used by the likes of the US.

Is it just a coincidence that this threat to block the import of devices that don't support GLONASS comes so soon after the discovery of a rather bizarre network of Russian spies in the US? Who were likely tracked by the GPS chips in their mobile phones?

I'm just sayin'...
