Carrier wastes no time in talking up WiFi calling on new Apple OS update.

T-Mobile Jazzed With WiFi Calling on New Apple iOS

T-Mobile wasted no time in welcoming the WiFi calling capabilities that will be available in the forthcoming Apple iOS operating system update.

Mike Sievert, chief marketing officer at T-Mobile US Inc. , blogged about the WiFi calling capabilities on the Monday afternoon that iOS 8 was announced by Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL). The OS update will be coming to Apple iPhones and iPads this fall. (See Apple Launches Biggest Changes Since iPhone.)

WiFi calling does pretty much exactly what it says on the tin: You turn the function on and can then make voice calls over WiFi without having to revert to the cellular network. T-Mobile says that with the Apple update more than 90% of the smartphones on its network will support WiFi calling.

It presently has 17 million Android and Windows WiFi calling-capable devices on its network. Sievert writes that "nearly 5 million customers use Wi-Fi Calling during any given month."

T-Mobile was the first US carrier to intro the capability in 2007. Sprint Corp. (NYSE: S) has recently added WiFi calling capabilities to its network too. (See Sprint Selects Kineto for Wi-Fi Calling.)

They have been updating WiFi calling
Sievert is right, they have been updating WiFi recently. The only problems I had using it recently is that it would put international calls straight to voice mail if I was on the hotel WiFi network, which was a little odd...

Does iOS 8 support handoff between WiFi and cellular or will the call drop when users leave WiFi? (Is this an OS decision or operator driven? Or chip level?)

Re: They have been updating WiFi calling
Obviously haven't seen the iOS version yet but on the Android you can set the app to use WiFi as the prefered network, cellular as the prefered network, or WiFi only for calls.

So no handoff, just one or the other? Wonder how much of an impediment that is. Not a big deal if you make most of your calls in your home.

Re: They have been updating WiFi calling
With one-third of wifi capable device owners making wifi calls you can be sure that market is going to grow as more spots open up. It's only smart for Apple and T-Mobile to team up on this one. Deals will most certainly be put together for other providers and manufactures as well leading maybe to some really good competition in the market and lower prices?
