Transit Wireless now has wireless service up in about 50 subway stations in New York City and is expecting to be available in 77 by the end of the year, with Sprint service coming online soon.

Transit Wireless CEO Bill Bayne wrote recently in a post on his company's blog that 3G, 4G, and WiFi service is now available "in about 50 stations throughout Midtown and the Upper West Side." Construction in Queens is under way. (See Transit Wireless: Unwiring the NYC Subway and Take the 4G Train: More Wireless in NYC Subways.)

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has just started to put ads up about the wireless service on subway trains.

Three of the four major US operators -- AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T), T-Mobile US Inc. , and Verizon Wireless -- already have 3G and 4G services in the stations that are online. Boingo Wireless Inc. is the WiFi provider for the stations. (See Verizon Onboard With NYC Subway Wireless.)

Sprint Corp. (NYSE: S) expects to offer services underground soon. "We expect to bring the first stations online this spring," a spokeswoman for Sprint told Light Reading on Monday. (See 4G LTE Grows (Above & Below).)

Here are the stations coming online in 2014.

Re: Sprint
I wonder if the the MTA in NYC, the MBTA in Boston, and similar transportation authorities in major cities could increase their revenue by selling two types of tickets: ones without wireless access and ones with wireless access.  Those with wireless access would pay more to get a single-use password to access the system.

OK sounds about right. I've never tried to maintain a connection once I step through the doors. I go into Airplane mode once I grab a seat.

Essential? Food, water, and shelter are essential. Network access in a train is "nice to have" at best.

Solid move by Sprint. Having coverage while traveling to and from work is essential and it's nice to see Sprint is stepping up to offer coverage to its customers.

Not in Chicago, but our system hasn't been upgraded yet. We trail NYC in SOME things like that.
