HONG KONG -- PCCW's subsidiary PCCW IMS Ltd today announced a move to transform Hong Kong into a "Wi-Fi city", by increasing the number of hotspots where users can access the Internet without wires from 400 to 3,000, including coverage to some MTR stations in the Kowloon area and all the stations on Hong Kong Island from mid 2007.

PCCW enables Wi-Fi users to enjoy the same broadband experience they get in the home or office, with high-speed Internet access never more than a short walk away.

Users will be able to use bandwidth-hungry applications such as video streaming, video conferencing, online gaming and large-file transfer with virtually any of the growing number of Wi-Fi-enabled gadgets, such as laptops, PDAs, smartphones or handheld gaming devices. Provision of Wi-Fi devices is forecast to grow from 40 million shipped worldwide last year to 249 million in 2011, according to US-based ABI Research.

As well as establishing round-the-clock coverage at 1,000 7-Eleven and Circle K convenience stores in Hong Kong, PCCW Wi-Fi service has been extended to public estate shopping complexes managed by The Link Management Limited. The Link Management Limited Director (Portfolio Management) Lam Lit Kwan said: "With Wi-Fi service, we are enhancing the customer experience at our properties by offering quality, choice and innovation. As Wi-Fi popularity takes off, we will expand coverage to include even more shopping arcades."

PCCW Consumer Group Managing Director Tom Chan said: "Our enhanced PCCW Wi-Fi coverage will give our customers another platform to quickly and easily access the rich content provided by Netvigator, now TV and the internet."
