The market for wifi calling
The idea of wifi calls is interesting. On one hand, there already are many ways to call over a wifi connection and/or a data plan: Skype, Hangouts, etc. What would make calls over carrier wifi different and more attractive? I think the enterprise should be the main target. If calls and messages are cheaper over carrier wifi, trust that companies will buy smartphones in bulk and be grateful that their people now also can go online.

But how will that fare with BYOD already predominant? Hmmm...

Re: Multipath TCP
Im not that familar with SCTCP (I bet most consumers don't have a preference either!), but does it work across both licensed and unlicensed spectrum as well?

Re: Multipath TCP
As a consumer I'd rather see efforts focused on SCTP than multpath TCP. There isn't the flow control needed in multipath TCP for the flakey connections that come with public wifi. Of course SCTP is an entirely new protocol and isn't backwards compatible like multipath TCP.

Seems like it could be possible in the mobile space though. Look how well IPv6 adoption has taken off in the US mobile indistry through. T-Mobile being IPv6 only on new Android 4.4 handssets and Verizon having all their LTE users on IPv6.

Content providers would have to step up and SCTP enable their servers/apps but an incentive to avoid data caps is a pretty big one.

Re: Muni Wi-Fi
Yeah, especially if they can monetize it. I think we're already seeing a resurgence in interest, although it's starting slow and mostly in California, it appears. LA is also exploring a project, and San Jose has one up and running. I bet/hope we'll see others follow suite.

Muni Wi-Fi
Your mention of San Francisco was very interesting. Do you think what they are doing there will bring back interest in muni Wi-Fi, which for the most part failed or never got off the ground in earlier attempts by many other cities?

Multipath TCP
I'll be very interested to hear operator perspectives on multipath TCP. So far, I've only heard from vendors, and even they had mixed opinions on the value of it for operators. SK Telecom is deep in R&D on it, but they didn't have anything to add as of yet.
