Is New Jersey the new capital of 5G testing? It could be!
AT&T has asked the FCC if it can do short-range 5G tests at its offices in Middletown, New Jersey. This would be its second US proto-5G test site. The operator has already applied to the FCC to carry out trials in Austin, Texas.
The new experimental license -- first spotted by Wireless Week -- would allow AT&T to test 28GHz and 39GHz systems at its lab.

The operator has so far said that it will start testing at 15GHz and move to 28GHz later. These will be fixed tests, at least initially. (See AT&T 5G Trials to Start With Fixed 15GHz Tests.)
Nonetheless, the request means that the Jerz is becoming a hotbed of early 5G activity, with Verizon running its own tests at its headquarters in Basking Ridge, N.J. as well. (See Verizon Hits 1-Gig+ in 5G Trials, Eyes Early Applications.)
