Verizon Investigating LTE Outage

Verizon Wireless says that it is investigating the cause of a major outage that took place Wednesday on its new 4G LTE network.

Spokesman Jeffrey Nelson says that the operator will update with more details. "ThunderBolts are making and receiving voice calls, but may get slower 1xRTT data," he says in an email reply about the outage.

Users contacting LR Mobile and others on Twitter say that the network has been down all day across the nation.

It is not yet clear why the High Tech Computer Corp. (HTC) (Taiwan: 2498) ThunderBolt phones are reverting to 1XRTT data connections rather than faster 3G CDMA links.

This appears to be the first major outage on the Verizon LTE network, which was initially launched in 38 markets in December 2010. It is the first test of how quickly the operator can deal with a speed bump on its fastest mobile data network.

We will report more when we know more.
