Verizon Confirms December LTE Launch

Verizon Wireless is throwing its hat in the FauxG marketing wars while also confirming a December launch date for its Long Term Evolution (LTE) network.

In what is sure to be the first of many commercials, Verizon aired an ad last night touting LTE as "coming December 2010." The commercial played up the network's lightening-fast speeds on a netbook, but Verizon will only offer USB dongles at launch. Smartphones and other devices will come in the first half of 2011.

Why it matters
Light Reading Mobile has been predicting an early December launch date for a while now, even as rumors swirled of a Nov. 15 launch. The operator will likely take its network live in the initial promised markets, including Boston, Chicago, Dallas, and New York City, before the holiday hubbub takes over. The carrier has promised to have 39 LTE networks up and running covering 100 million before the end of the year, so a launch sooner rather than later in December appears to be in the cards.
