Syniverse: Expect a Summer of LTE Roaming

Syniverse is expecting 2015 to be a hot summer for new international LTE roaming deals.

Syniverse Technologies LLC 's CMO Mary Clark says that there are about 60 to 80 new international LTE roaming deals in place now. She expects at least some of these to be revealed this summer.

"The population of operators present and ready to start roaming is now reaching a tipping point," Clark says. (See LTE Roaming Action Intensifies.)

Clark reckons there are around 140 deals in total either agreed on or being worked out right now. The agreements largely span North America, Europe, Australia and north Asia. (See Talkin' the Low-Down LTE Roaming Blues.)

Syniverse has been working for several years to connect operators across the world for LTE roaming. The firm announced trials with Tier 1 operators in 2012. (See Tier 1s Trial LTE Roaming With Syniverse.)

The expectation of a forthcoming summer LTE roaming frenzy, however, only applies to data interconnects, Clark notes. Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) interconnects, which will allow users to make VoIP calls between international operators, are further out.

Although Clark says that a test Syniverse is running with LG Electronics Inc. (London: LGLD; Korea: 6657.KS) and KDDI Corp. has gone well.
