SK Telecom plans to wow attendees at this year's Mobile World Congress with three-band carrier aggregation capabilities that enable LTE-Advanced downlink connections of up to 450 Mbit/s.

The South Korean operator announced Monday that is has already developed technology that enables it to combine the capacity of three separate wireless bands (one 20MHz and two 10MHz) to enable an LTE-Advanced connection of up to 300 Mbit/s.

Now the mobile broadband innovator, which has signed up more than 1 million customers for the LTE-Advanced service it launched in June 2013, plans to use the same technology to aggregate three 20MHz bands in order to enable a 4G connection with theoretical downstream speeds of up to 450 Mbit/s and show that capability at Mobile World Congress 2014 in Barcelona.

To turn theory into practice, though, SK Telecom (Nasdaq: SKM) needs support from wireless chip vendors and device manufacturers, which have yet to develop commercial products that can handle such capabilities (which are not yet standardized) and speeds. SK Telecom, though, is confident that supporting products will be available by the end of 2014.

SK Telecom is determined to be at the forefront of mobile broadband technology advances, and has been pushing the speed limits of LTE-Advanced in recent months. (See SK Telecom Claims 225Mbit/s 4G LTE.)

But its work is not restricted to faster connections: The operator is also pumping R&D resources into virtualization technologies, next-generation application development, small cells, and content delivery capabilities. For more on these developments, see:

Headline speed and real-world speed....
So, let's keep in mind that the speeds being cited here are theoretical top end downstream connections and that real-world connections would not run as fast.

For example - the theoretical top end for SK Telecom's current LTE-Advanced service is 150 Mbit/s but the average speed experienced by users is around 50 Mbit/s. (according to statistics from South Korea's Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning - see

Just keep in mind, though, how amazing an average mobile broadband connection of 50 Mbit/s is.... that's some kick-ass 4G.
