LTE TDD: Asia's Hot Tech

12:00 PM -- Long Term Evolution Time Division Duplex (LTE TDD) is all set to be a globally deployed next-generation mobile technology in years to come, but just now all the major action appears to happening in Asia/Pacific.

Much of the progress is being highlighted now because the GSM Association (GSMA) 's Mobile Asia Congress event is taking place in Hong Kong this week.

Here are the key LTE TDD developments from the past few days:

  • Having already established a proto-LTE TDD network in Japan, SoftBank Mobile Corp. is set to take its network a step further in early 2012, with plans to deploy 12,000 base stations, reports the GSMA's Mobile Business Briefing. (See Softbank Preps Pseudo-LTE TDD Service.)

  • China Mobile Ltd. (NYSE: CHL) is ready for the next phase of its LTE TDD services pilot, according to the site. China Mobile has been one of the key companies driving the uptake of LTE TDD technology through the Global TD-LTE Initiative , which was set up earlier this year. (See Global TDD Initiative Launched at MWC 2011.)

  • Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. has been showing off its multi-mode terminal chip that supports both the FDD and TDD flavors of LTE. The vendor believes this is the first multimode-device chipset based on the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) 's Release 9 standard.

  • Such dual-mode chips are key to the advancement of the global LTE market, believes the GSMA's Director General Anne Bouverot, but they're not going to be easy to design. (See GSMA: Dual-Mode a Must for LTE Devices.)

  • There's plenty of action in India, where multiple Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) license-holders are ready to roll out LTE TDD networks in the final weeks of this year and throughout 2012.
