Hola, LTE

10:45 AM -- Telefónica SA (NYSE: TEF) officially launched a Long Term Evolution (LTE) service in Madrid and Barcelona today. (See Telefonica Picks AlcaLu for LTE Pilots and Euronews: AlcaLu Lands Key LTE Deal.)

Following the news on Wednesday morning that Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU) will supply the network equipment, the Spanish giant has issued more details about the service. The press release is only in Spanish, so I've relied here on Google translate for the details since my understanding of the language unfortunately goes as far as what I got from Sesame Street:

  • The service is available to Telefónica business customers for €45 (US$61.61) per month.

  • Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. is providing the USB modems.

  • Average downlink speed is expected to be up to 30Mbit/s.

  • Telefónica expects to have LTE smartphones in 2012.

  • The operators is using 2.6GHz spectrum for the service.

So now that Telefónica has gone live with LTE in Spain, when will Vodafone España S.A. and Orange Spain make their moves?
