STOCKHOLM -- Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) has been selected by SouthernLINC Wireless, a Southern Company (NYSE: SO), to serve as the sole infrastructure vendor in the construction of the company’s future 4G LTE network. The network is designed to serve the high-speed wireless data and voice needs of Southern Company’s electric utilities.

SouthernLINC Wireless is an Atlanta-based regional wireless carrier with network coverage in the major metro and rural areas of Alabama, Georgia, southeast Mississippi and northwest Florida. Planning and design for the 4G LTE 800 MHz network is now in progress. Construction will begin in 2015 and the network should be fully operational by 2018.

Ericsson will provide a complete Evolved Packet Core (EPC) – the core network of the LTE system. The EPC includes an Evolved Packet Gateway on the SSR 8000 family and Mobility Management Entity. In addition, the radio access network will include the RBS 6000 multi-standard base station portfolio. The agreement also includes services for network rollout, integration and support, deployment services and network management.
