11:25 AM Clearwire's Morrow is a no-show at 4G World, sends CCO instead, which seems to be a trend at the event
11:25 AM -- CHICAGO -- 4G World -- I just walked out of the Clearwire LLC (Nasdaq: CLWR) keynote because it didn't feature CEO Bill Morrow -- as advertised -- but rather chief commercial officer Mike Sievert instead.
Nothing against Mike Sievert, you understand; he's a fine speaker and all that. It's just that keynote downgrades seem to happening all too frequently at this show.
Glenn Lurie, the head of AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T)'s emerging devices group, was supposed to start the proceedings yesterday but David Haight, VP of business development at the group, turned up in his place. Both Morrow and Lurie are still listed on the schedule as keynote speakers.
So what's going on?
There's no shortage of carriers here. All the big US players are here -- China Mobile Communications Corp. , KDDI Corp. , and Telstra Corp. Ltd. (ASX: TLS; NZK: TLS) too. The elusive LightSquared is even rumored to be stalking the halls.
It just feels like carriers aren't quite ready to commit the big names to this smaller show. Even if it does seem to be generating more buzz -- and maybe even more hard news -- than the recent CTIA show.
It would have been nice, however, if the keynote schedule hadn't promised more than it can actually deliver.
