Turkcell Heads to Germany

6:20 AM -- Turkcell Iletisim Hizmetleri A.S. (NYSE: TKC) has signed a five-year mobile wholesale deal with Deutsche Telekom AG (NYSE: DT), and will launch Turkcell Europe-branded 3G services in Germany starting in February 2011.

"We are happy that we can now meet communications and technology needs of our citizens and people in Germany who have close ties with Turkey through our high quality products and services," said Turkcell CEO Sureyya Ciliv in a prepared statement. Pyramid Research , the German mobile services market (voice and data) is set to be worth US$28.5 billion in 2010. Germany Intelligence Report published earlier this year, expects the German mobile market to grow from 109.3 million connections in 2009 (132 percent penetration rate) to nearly 132 million mobile connections (158 percent penetration rate) by the end of 2014.

Turkcell has its work cut out, however. The German mobile market is already incredibly competitive, with T-Mobile International AG , Vodafone Germany , E-Plus Service GmbH & Co. KG , and Telefónica Deutschland GmbH (Telefónica O2) already large, well established players.

Turkcell dominates its domestic market, boasting more than 34 million customers and a 55 percent market share.
