Our editorial team gets the straight scoop from service providers regarding LTE-Advanced, Gigabit Wi-Fi, small cell deployments, and more

February 22, 2013

Mobile World Congress is arguably the most important annual industry event in the communications sector calendar these days, not least because mobile/wireless technology, application and device developments are (perhaps more arguably) the most important to those involved in the modern-day global communications industry. So this year the Light Reading editorial team decided that, ahead of the Barcelona show, we would court the opinions of our service provider readers by asking them a few relatively simple questions. We did this in the hope that the (anonymous) responses would provide us with a simple snapshot of some service provider perceptions about various technologies and developments that we believe are relevant to those attending the show. We first shared these insights with the folks who came to our mixer on Tuesday night, but now we're opening them up for everyone else. So, here are those results in all their glory. We hope they provide some food for thought. — The Staff, Light Reading

LTE-Advanced won't be widely deployed this year, but it is definitely on the radar.
Small cells can live and die by the backhaul. Without adequate wireline facilities the wireless offload prospects are challenging.
In short, Gigabit Wi-Fi will be here when it gets here.
Looks like 2014 will be the year of VoLTE/4G voice services.
WebRTC is still elusive. One wonders if by the time service providers get on board with this, will consumers have already found alternatives with over-the-top providers?
Why aren't we more popular in Belize? (Rhetorical question. We think we know why.)
Most of our survey respondents were mobile operators with just a few fixed line-only operators thrown in.
