Euronews: Mr. MeeGo Headed for HP?

August 20, 2012 | Paul Rainford |

Nokia Corp. and Google provide the focus on what is frankly a quiet day for EMEA telecom news.

  • Alberto Torres, who left Nokia after running its now abandoned MeeGo operations, is to resurface as the head of a new Mobility unit at Hewlett-Packard Co., according to a report on The Verge. The new unit will be responsible for "consumer tablets" and other wireless-related product areas, says the report, which is based on a leaked internal email. (See MWC 2011: Adios, MeeGo.)

  • And the big Nokia news just keeps on coming: Finnish teenager Ere Karjalainen saw off all-comers in Finland's annual phone-hurling contest by launching his old Nokia handset a not insubstantial 101.46 meters. Ere prepared for his event "by drinking," apparently.

  • Google's restructuring of Motorola Mobility Inc. is kicking in with the laying off of 30 employees of the company's Israeli unit, reports Telecompaper (subscription required). The search giant plans to lose 4,000 Motorola Mobility employees worldwide. (See Google to Cut 4,000 Motorola Jobs.)
