Rubin Revels in Android Ascendancy

Google's Android guru revealed Tuesday that 500,000 devices using the mobile operating system are being activated for the first time every day.

Andy Rubin, Google's senior vice president of Mobile, said that the number of new devices has risen from the 350,000 that the search giant said were being activated each day this spring. "There are now over 500,000 Android devices activated every day, and it's growing at 4.4% w/w [week over week]," Rubin tweeted Tuesday.

Android is now in both low-end and high-end smartphones as well as mobile tablets and other devices. T-Mobile USA revealed its latest smartphone using the operating system -- the MyTouch Slide 4G -- Tuesday morning.

Why this matters
As Nokia Corp. CEO Stephen Elop has recognized, Android is now the mainstream mobile operating system to beat. This year will probably see prices on devices in the lower end of the market decrease further, taking the mobile OS fight into the feature phone arena.
