Euronews: iPad 4G Ads Get Third Degree

May 01, 2012 | Paul Rainford |

Apple Inc., Allot Communications Ltd. and eircom make the cut on what is frankly a quiet day so far in EMEA telecom.

  • The U.K.'s Advertising Authority is taking a closer look at the marketing of Apple's latest iPad, reports the BBC. The move comes in the face of complaints that the iPad's 4G capabilities are being heavily promoted in the U.K. and mainland Europe when in fact the device's particular flavor of 4G-compatibility won't work in either. (See Euronews: Limited Release for New iPad and Apple Challenged Down Under Over iPad "4G".)

  • Allot Communications, the Israeli supplier of Service Provider Information Technology (SPIT), is to buy Ortiva Wireless Inc., which sells software for managing the distribution of mobile video. The terms of the deal were not disclosed. (See Allot to Buy Ortiva Wireless, Allot Records $3.2M Profit in Q1 and Allot Responds to Iran Article.)

  • The examiner acting for Ireland's eircom has rejected a bid for the ailing incumbent, reports the Irish Times. The company made a loss of €2.8 billion (US$3.7 billion) for the financial year ending June 2011. (See Lenders to Lean on Eircom and Eircom Blends Wi-Fi with Broadband.)
