Euronews: 4G Gives EE a Capital Edge

Everything Everywhere Ltd. (EE), Nokia Siemens Networks, RootMetrics, Ooredoo, Ericsson AB, Telenor ASA, Liberty Global Inc. and Casa Systems Inc. all feature in today's regional roundup.

  • EE is reaping the benefits of its 4G advantage in the U.K., where it has launched services ahead of its main rivals. Independent mobile service performance analytics firm RootMetrics has released a report showing that, following 83,000 mobile performance tests covering voice, data and messaging services, EE was the best overall performer in London.   • NSN has the best macro base stations in the industry, according to radio access network (RAN equipment competitive analysis conducted by ABI Research, which found that NSN achieved "best-in-class rank for the essential IP, advanced features, multi-protocol support and LTE RAN contracts criteria." Ericsson was ranked second and Alcatel-Lucent third. Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. and ZTE Corp. were included in the analysis. For full details, see this research note.

  • Ooredoo, the fabulously-named Middle East operator formerly known as Qtel, has launched 4G services in Qatar and Oman, with Kuwait to be added to its LTE markets later this year. See this announcement for more details.

  • Ericsson has released its latest Mobility Report, which provides a host of updated statistics and forecasts related to mobile video traffic, smartphone uptake, applications usage and more.

  • Telenor has introduced a range of data roaming packages to encourage the use of mobile broadband services by its customers when they travel abroad. For example, Norwegians travelling within Europe can buy a weekly data package, allowing up to 150 Mbytes of data, for 199 Norwegian krone (US$34.25). For more details, see this press release.

  • Liberty Global is shaking up the top management team at Virgin Media following its successful acquisition of the U.K. cable operator. Dana Strong has been named as the new Virgin Media Chief Operating Officer, effective July 1. She succeeds Andrew Barron, who is leaving. For more on this change, see this press release.   • French cable operator Numericable is to deploy the C10G Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) from Casa Systems as it rolls out high-speed broadband and VoIP services. For more details, see this news release.
