AT&T and Sprint are now committed to have service in all 277 underground subway stations in New York City, Transit Wireless tells Light Reading as it continues its metro deployment.

AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) revealed Wednesday that it will support the entire Transit Wireless project. The operator is expecting to deploy a distributed antenna system (DAS) that supports 3G and 4G services -- as well as free WiFi from Boingo Wireless Inc. -- in all of the subterranean NYC subway stations by the end of 2017. (See Transit Wireless: Unwiring the NYC Subway.)

Light Reading checked with Transit Wireless to see which of the other big four mobile operators are fully committed to the underground wireless project so far.

"AT&T and Sprint have committed for the full project, and Verizon and T-Mobile are committed through phase two. However, contract negotiations are ongoing," a Transit Wireless spokeswoman tells us.

The company recently said that it has about 50 stations in Manhattan deployed so far and is adding service in Queens as it builds out the deployment. The footprint is expected to be up around 77 stations by the year's end. (See Take the 4G Train: More Wireless in NYC Subways.)

AT&T, T-Mobile US Inc. , and Verizon Wireless now have service in the live stations. Sprint service is expected launch this Spring. (See Sprint to Spring Into NYC Subways Soon.)

You can check out the live stations here.

Re: Better title.
LOL. More like T-Mobile says no to small cells. AT&T has been deploying them around Disneyworld etc.

NYC Subway Coverage
I'm an NYC subway rider and ATT customer.  The coverage in the up and running stations is great.  It is hilarious to see the looks on average joes who now find their phones ringing below ground.  Yet, they don't understand why the call drops as soon as the train starts moving.

I really only use the coverage for data.  I never use the wifi, because it takes too long to get through the video ads to get to the free session.  Most times, the train you want pulls into the station before you can take advantage of it.

Since the stations are fiber fed, the LTE data is fast enough, and provides a better user experience.

Chicago
All this attention on New York makes me wonder where Chicago is with its own 4G transit system upgrade. The city was was issuing RFPs last spring, I believe, but we haven't heard much about it since.

All aboard!
As one of the two biggest carriers in the US, Verizon is going to need to get on board the whole program for completeness.

Or is Verizon a top provider in New York?

BTW, I'm impressed with your play-on-words, using a variant of a London Underground catchphrase to headline a story about the New York Subway. Well played, sir!
