XO Adds Ciena to 100G Roster

XO Communications Inc. has picked the 6500 Packet Optical Platform from Ciena Corp. for a 100Gbit/s buildout in metro and regional networks, the companies announced early Wednesday.

Among the features that made the 6500 attractive were its use of coherent detection and its Optical Transport Network (OTN) switching capability, XO CTO Randy Nicklas said in a statement.

Why this matters
XO has some ambitious ideas for its network, including 100Gbit/s managed wavelength services. It could provide good bragging rights for Ciena, the early leader in 100Gbit/s gear.

In August, XO picked Nokia Siemens Networks for the core of its 100Gbit/s network and it's now gone to Ciena, which it's been using for metro Ethernet.

The primary vendor left out of that 100Gbit/s equation so far is Infinera Corp., which along with NSN had been XO's long-haul transport provider. This doesn't necessarily mean Infinera is being shut out. XO wanted to move quickly with this phase of deployment, and the Infinera DTN-X might not have been available at the moment.

XO is taking a more measured approach to the next phase, having issued a request for proposals (RFP) for speeds beyond 100 Gbit/s, Nicklas told Light Reading in August.
