Mr. Goldstein,

Very keen observation on Lucent's strength and failure on ATM & IP capabilities. What I really resonated with was the stance on IP not being mutually exclusive with handling ATM. Only if some of the LU managers could understand these things...

Hmmmm. Leadership by "balanced committee". It would certainly be a novel method of leadership. Can't wait for the HBR article.

Merging LU with ALA will be a good thing. In the end, the customers and shareholders will benefit and so will the employees that remain after the cuts. On the wireline side, will the ALA folks be in the drivers seat on product rationalization?

Or will there be a balanced committee to decide which CTO organization has the best crystal ball for each sub-area and should take the lead?

We can't really know until the merger completes because legally we can not act in concert with each other until then.

The next 6 months should be quite interesting and filled with some doubt: You may want to start a scorecard of who leaves LU and ALA before the merger completes to get an idea of who's vision will NOT likely be the ALA/LU future.

I'm sure both ALA and LU will work hard to reassure their customers that their continued investments in their ALA and LU products will be appropriate.

dcb, I don't think that Lucent really screwed up by getting bigger into ATM, though they probably overpaid for Ascend about as badly as they did for everything else in those days! While not fashionable in the blogosphere, ATM sales grew, as it was the backbone for DSL.

"Getting" IP is not mutually exclusive with handling ATM. Lucent couldn't get IP, but without ATM, they still woudln't have gotten it.

What's most embarassing is that Lucent was the king of switching, with its aging 5ESS, yet when it came time for a more modern "softswitch" replacement, all internal efforts failed, and they ended up buying Telica. It wasn't really rocket science, either.

there is plenty of debate going on right now about that, but we are not too optimistic. We have had constant starts and stops over the last few years as the CTO organization took us in one direction and then the other. All efforts to launch a real next generation DWDM system were trashed. First Movaz was the future. Once that didn't work we finally began a real multihaul product development, until CTO somehow convinced the "leadership" to build UPM, which would be everything to everyone. Typical bell head design, not optimized for anything. It seems to the staff here like BandWidth Manager all over again with the same people calling the shots. Our local managers have been very frustrated, trying to push for a competitive MH DWDM product plan, but our organization has been absorbed and we are building a product defined by CTO and the Unite TDM "experts". Now there's a scrambled to integrate RS. It's been heading down a path of being neat technology that none would likely buy. Now we hear that Alcatel has a similar product that is available, so the UPM slideware should be a short discussion. One would think we would relook at our plans, but no sign of that yet. Same people, same result. Moving to MH is the least of our problems.
