bunty, yes DT stands for DWDM Terminal (see http://www.nortelnetworks.com/products/01/optera/long_haul/dwdm/fandb.html).

I have to hand it to Nortel for leveraging their HDX platform to make the DT.

I like your summary Zettabit in post 16.

However, I dont't fully agree with your statement:

True, both the DX and HDX have integrated DWDM 2.5G/10G optics, but the DT could be used to provide 10Gbps transparency to the DX with a 1550nm line interface (http://www.nortelnetworks.com/products/01/optera/connect/dx/), say for signal degraded protection switching application.

The Dx could also be used as an OC-3/STM-1 collector and STS-1/VC-4 groomer node for a DT. While the DT is used as a combiner for the OC-48/STM-4 links.

The DT could also act as a remote collector terminal for the HDX (http://www.nortelnetworks.com/products/01/optera/connect/hdx/).

However, that isn't currently how the DT is being positioned, so you are right on the mark with:

"DT is just a new higher density terminal with lasers that have better [out-of-band] FEC and tunability over the current, existing LH1600 terminals (http://www.nortelnetworks.com/products/01/optera/long_haul/1600/)."

and as you rightly concur:

"In that sense, the LH1600 TERMINALS will become obsolete, but the LH1600 optical amplifier line can take its wavelengths from either existing LH1600 terminals, or new DT terminals."

But, it can be said it is a managed obsolence.

The DT will operate side-by-side with the LH and DX. That will be the status quo until the LH1600 and/or the DX can support 10G transparency. Until then, the DT has to be at both ends of the path.

It will be interesting to see if the DT replaces the DX in the OPTera Metro Connect configuration (http://www.nortelnetworks.com/products/01/optera/metro/msp/connect/) in the long term.

It will also be interesting to see if the DT ever supports 2.5G transparency.
