Sprint Launches 15 Markets in 4G LTE Clusters

Sprint Nextel Corp. has tripled its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) footprint at launch, switching on a total of 15 markets, largely down south in Texas and Georgia.

Sprint says that coverage can now be found in Atlanta, Athens, Calhoun, Carrollton, Newnan and Rome in Georgia. In Texas, Sprint has LTE service in the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area, Granbury-Hood County, Houston, Huntsville, San Antonio and Waco. Sprint has also added St. Joseph, Missouri to its 4G roster.

The operator has also put out this video about what LTE should mean for customers. Sprint is promising peak download speeds of 25 Mbit/s with averages of 6 to 8 Mbit/s. Uploads clock in at 2 to 3 Mbit/s. Expected speeds are "based on testing of deployed sites prior to launch," the operator states.

Why this matters
A Sprint spokeswoman told Light Reading Mobile in January that the operator would swiftly build out more towns and cities around its initial launch areas. The initial launch, triple the size of what it initially promised, indicates it is still working from this playbook.
