Slow Ride: Sprint Hits 43 4G LTE Markets
Sprint Nextel Corp. is adding 11 new Long Term Evolution (LTE) towns and cities in Indiana, Kansas, Maryland and more.
The operator revealed the new deployments via its company blog. It also stated that the "4G LTE network build is under way in more than 115 cities within the existing Sprint nationwide 3G footprint, including Boston; Charlotte, N.C.; Chicago; Indianapolis; Los Angeles; New Orleans; New York; Philadelphia; San Francisco; and Washington, D.C."
The new towns and cities going live this time are:
- Anderson, Ind.
- Clarke County, Va./Jefferson County, W.Va.
- Harrisburg/Carlisle/Hershey, Pa.
- Hagerstown, Md./Martinsburg, W.Va.
- Harrisonburg, Va.
- Muncie, Ind.
- Peabody, Mass.
- Salina, Kan.
- Shenandoah County, Va.
- South Bend/Mishawaka, Ind.
- Winchester, Va.
Why this matters Sprint currently has the distinction of operating the smallest LTE network -- which typically offers lower data speeds -- of the big three 4G carrier networks in the U.S. Sprint is promising more deployments in larger cities in the "coming months" but -- as shown by the latest deployments -- is currently pushing out 4G in smaller towns and cities.
