Telstra Sticks With Ericsson for 100G

February 26, 2013 | Craig Matsumoto |
BARCELONA -- Mobile World Congress -- Telstra Corp. Ltd. will be using Ericsson's optical gear for coherent 100Gbit/s transmission, Ericsson AB announced Tuesday morning.

The deal includes Ericsson's MHL3000 long-haul platform and its SPO 1400 metro gear.

Why this matters
The Telstra-Ericsson love continues. On Monday, Ericsson announced Telstra will expand its Ericsson-based LTE buildout and start trying out LTE-Advanced with the vendor as well.

On the optical side, Telstra is not only re-upping with Ericsson as a core optical vendor but is now using Ericsson's gear for metro and regional networks as well. The press release describes Ericsson as a "prime supplier" for those parts of the networks, implying that the deal isn't exclusive.

The transition to coherent 100Gbit/s gives optical vendors a relatively rare chance to unseat one another at carriers. Ericsson hasn't been as visible as Alcatel-Lucent or Ciena Corp. in terms of announcements.
