Infinera Snags One From NSN

May 13, 2013 | Craig Matsumoto |
Belgacom International Carrier Services (BICS) will be upgrading its optical network with Infinera Corp.'s DTN-X, the vendor is announcing Monday.

Nokia Siemens Networks had been involved in BICS's last optical upgrade, to 40 Gbit/s, but BICS is making a change as it enters the 100Gbit/s generation.

BICS is one of 27 customers that have committed to deploy the DTN-X, Infinera says. The box is due to start running in BICS's European network in September or October, says Mark Showalter, Infinera's senior director of marketing.

Why this matters
It's an early black eye for Coriant, the NSN optical-networking spinoff that officially came to life just a week ago. (See Coriant Separates from NSN.)

Of course, some customer angst is to be expected, given the general uncertainty around NSN.

While BICS does serve global Tier 1 telcos as a wholesaler, it's not as if it's Coriant's only possible customer. It's only one data point -- and on the bright side, it didn't get announced on the exact day that Coriant separated from NSN.
