Byte and Switch is officially launching its Big Bytes awards program to recognize outstanding products and services in storage networking.

The Big Bytes award winners will be announced in a formal presentation at StoragePlus 2006, Byte and Switch’s two-day forum for pre-qualified enterprise storage purchasers, to be held in Burlingame, Calif., September 12 and 13. Finalists will be posted during the week beginning September 5.
The awards will focus on generally available products and services announced after September 2005. Categories include the following:
PRODUCTS & SERVICES
Recognizing significant innovations in network storage equipment, software, and services over the past year:
- Backup & Archiving
Hardware and/or software used for backup and archiving, including CAS, CDP, and VTL products
- NAS
All hardware and software related to network-attached storage
- SAN
Arrays, switches, routers/bridges, SAN extension equipment, HBAs, and other products used to construct Fibre Channel or IP SANs
- Services
Storage services, such as online backup, unrelated to services offered by vendors for their specific products
- Storage Network Security
Devices and software specifically aimed at protecting data in storage networks
- Storage Management Software
Including SRM, SAN management, file systems, virtualization, ILM, classification and search, document management, email management, and related areas
- Storage Network Test Equipment
Including protocol analyzers, emulators, and stress testers designed specifically for storage networking
- WAN Optimization
Including de-dupe and compression
USER EXCELLENCE
Recognizing end-user organizations nominated by their suppliers for innovation, ROI, and creativity in network storage deployments:
- SMB
Businesses with up to 500 employees
- Small to Medium-Sized Enterprise
Businesses with 500 to 1,000 employees
- Large Enterprise
Businesses with more than 1,000 employees
COMPANIES
Recognizing distinguished storage suppliers:
- Private Company
Best IPO or M&A prospect among privately held storage networking firms
- Public Company
Best investment potential among publicly held storage firms
Nominees in all categories will be judged by a panel composed of the Byte and Switch editors and an independent advisory board that Byte and Switch will invite from across the industry. Advisory board members will be participating in the StoragePlus 2006 conference.
