Although network operators face common eco-related challenges in developing strategies to ensure a sustainable supply of renewable energy sources, actual approaches often vary according to the underlying technology employed. This event provides content that is specifically relevant to the needs of both wireless or wireline network operators.

The primary goals of
Green Telecom East 2009 will be to closely explore several key trends:
  • The impact of smart home architectures, assessing environmental considerations for both network operators and end-users.

  • The status of innovation in the wireless core, including the tangible impact of latest-generation wireless core hardware on footprint and network power consumption, and the resulting savings in operating expenses.

  • Leveraging SIP services to reduce the fixed network's carbon footprint, exploring the feasibility of greatly reducing travel-related impacts through increased use of video conferencing, data share, and other multimedia applications.

  • Implementing best-in-class environmental practices in radio access networks, examining the latest innovations in the RAN that deliver more efficient radio technology, as well as a reduction in construction and maintenance costs for both urban and remote network deployments.

  • An update on delivering green Ethernet solutions in the fixed network, including the change in product mix that is powering new Ethernet products and configurations.

  • The status and timing of standards and benchmarks to enable measurement of overall progress within the telecom industry. We will also discuss the thrust by some operators to develop their own unique set of vendor power consumption benchmarks.

Among the key questions we will seek to answer:
  • What are the timelines for truly green infrastructure products to reach the market?
  • What are the factors (e.g., footprint, power consumption, etc.) that network operators view as critical to supporting an eco-driven business case?
  • Which market segments – wireline, wireless, or cable – will be most aggressive in implementing eco-friendly strategies?
  • Will the impact be most profound in established or emerging markets?
  • Are home gateway and femtocell solutions power efficient or simply moving power requirements from the network operator to the residential subscriber?
  • Can SIP applications be effectively utilized as an alternative to face-to-face meetings?
  • Will more network operators opt to develop internal power consumption-saving metrics, or will they wait for the completion of industry-wide guidelines?
  • When will industry-wide guidelines become available?
  • What has to happen next to ensure that a green transformation actually takes place?
Without question, the movement to deliver eco-friendly networks is on the rise, driven by the desire to not only reduce greenhouse emissions, but also to reduce ongoing opex associated with power consumption and the footprint of legacy networks and data centers. However, there is no formal definition of what constitutes a green telecom strategy from an architecture or product perspective – which drives network operators in some cases to adopt ad-hoc approaches. This conference will provide attendees with a better understanding of the risks and rewards involved and offer practical advice to address the crucial factors they need to consider when moving forward.
