Conference Program
- 08:30 a.m. - 09:00 a.m. Registration & Breakfast
- 09:00 a.m. - 09:30 a.m. The Future Evolution of the North American Backhaul Market:
Heavy Reading's View
Drawing on Heavy Reading's new "Ethernet Backhaul" market tracker and forecasting tool, Senior Analyst Patrick Donegan will share some of Heavy Reading's thoughts on the North American backhaul market and the pace of change relative to other regions of the world. Pointing to specific carrier examples, the outlook for the North American market in terms of rates of change and likely rates of new IP/Ethernet adoption will be forecast through 2011.
- 09:30 a.m. - 10:10 a.m. Opening Keynote: Dr. John Saw, CTO, Clearwire
Fresh from announcing its plans to merge with Sprint's WiMax business to create the first nationwide 4G wireless broadband company, Clearwire has set out a clear strategy for bypassing the LECs wherever possible and building its own backhaul network. Dr. Saw will outline how Clearwire plans to leverage dark fiber as well as an extensive build-out of new generation Ethernet microwave equipment to bring the bandwidth to the network that is needed to deliver on the promise of Mobile WiMax.
- 10:10 a.m. - 10:40 a.m. Vendor Perspectives: Ciena, RAD Data Communications
Taylor Salman, Solutions Marketing Director, Ciena
Earl Emerson, Director of System Engineering, RAD Data Communications
- 10:40 a.m. - 10:55 a.m. Break
- 10:55 a.m. - 12:05 p.m. Panel Debate:
Ethernet Alternatives to T1s at the Cell Site
This session will consider the business case for maintaining the present-day T1/E1 environment as compared with new options that are coming onto the market such as Ethernet service over fiber, HFC, microwave, copper bonding, and circuit bonding. Vendors and carriers will be asked to explain how the change of technologies and business practices from the tried and (more or less) trusted TDM environment can be justified and at what time scales.
Moderator: Gabriel Brown, Senior Analyst, Heavy Reading
Panelists: Willy Kremer, Director, Network & Solutions Architecture, Optical Networks, Alcatel-Lucent
Andy Walker, Director of Portfolio Solutions, Ciena
Chris Evarts, Director of Product Management, Tellabs
Jim Carlin, Product Marketing Manager, Ericsson

- 02:20 p.m. - 03:00 p.m. Afternoon Keynote: Jerry Holland, VP, Wireless Sales, Verizon
Verizon is one of the largest LECs in the United States, providing backhaul services to all the country’s biggest cellular operators. Jerry Holland will explain the company’s current backhaul services and how they have evolved over the last 12 months. He will also outline the company’s vision for bringing services to the cell site that meet the cellular operator’s expectations in terms of coverage, service quality, and price point.

- 03:45 p.m. - 05:00 p.m. Panel Debate:
Managing New Traffic Volumes & New Traffic Types in the Backhaul Network
With wireless consumers generating an ever-widening array of different applications and increasing volumes of data traffic, panelists will be invited to discuss the basic transport protocols required to support these changing traffic patterns and the ways to implement them in a network that is almost entirely based on TDM today. This session will cover the challenges of bandwidth management, QOS, and OAM in the backhaul network as carriers look to graft the potential advantages of a new and unfamiliar IP/Ethernet environment onto a mature and familiar TDM environment that is nevertheless unsustainable over the long term.
