The board of Telecom Italia has agreed to spin off the company's fixed-line network in a move that, says the company, will guarantee all Italian operators equal access to its network and unbundled services.
Software-defined networking (SDN) software specialist Vello is creating 71 new jobs in Belfast, Northern Ireland, about half of which will be R&D roles. Vello, which established a U.K. division in 2012, is getting financial support from Invest Northern Ireland to create the new jobs.
The Ethiopian government is looking to sign agreements with both ZTE and Huawei in the coming weeks for the upgrading and expansion of the country's mobile infrastructure, reports Reuters. Ethiopia, which has a population of 84.7 million, currently has around 20 million subscribers and hopes to be able to double this number once the network expansion is complete.
There is speculation afoot that Russian operator Rostelecom may merge with Tele2 Russia, following the appointment of a former Rostelecom man to run Tele2 Russia, reports Reuters. Tele2 Russia was bought from its Nordic former owner Tele2 AB by state bank VTB in March.
Brits are wasting £5.8 million (US$8.8 million) on apps they have paid for but don't use, according to a survey by U.K. MVNO Tesco Mobile and cited by Mobile News. The average British smartphone has 23 apps installed on it: Team Euronews is doing its bit to bring that average down.
U.K. incumbent BT Group plc has dumped Yahoo Inc. as its residential email provider after scores of disgruntled customers complained their accounts had been used by spammers, reports the Daily Telegraph. Customers' email will now be moved over to BT Mail.
