Provider Backbone Bridging – Traffic Engineering (PBB-TE)

A method of delivering deterministic, connection-oriented Ethernet service, standardized as Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. (IEEE) 802.1Qay.

PBB-TE began life as Provider Backbone Transport (PBT), with Nortel Networks Ltd. as its primary champion. The idea was to toughen up Ethernet, making it behave more like the circuit-switched networks that telcos are accustomed to. In turn, this was supposed to help push Ethernet as a carrier transport option, letting Ethernet be carried natively across a telecom network.

PBB-TE gathered support from other vendors, but momentum stalled as Nortel entered bankruptcy and restructuring in 2009. By mid-2010, PBB-TE had lost a lot of ground to MPLS-TP, formerly known as Transport MPLS. (See The Decline & Fall of Nortel Networks and Asia/Pacific Warms to MPLS-TP.)
