Where have we heard this before? Maybe some operator, the biggest in the world, perhaps...

Imagine a Match

The Bauminator reported in October that, according to Comcast Corp. (Nasdaq: CMCSA, CMCSK) CTO Tony Werner, the MSO is cooking up plans to deploy a new video compression technique. (See Comcast Ready to Reclaim Bandwidth.)

As explained:

  • Comcast has started testing the "improved" compression scheme and plans to roll it "across the board" sometime next year [in 2008]. He did not dive into the technical specifics of the compression plan nor note any specific vendor partners, but he said it will improve bandwidth efficiency by 50 percent without affecting video quality.

Might it prove to be a match with the following new product announcement and associated news item? (See Imagine Unveils Platform and Imagine Raises the Bandwidth Bar .)

  • Imagine Communications ... today announced its first available product, the ICETM Broadcast System. Based on the powerful ICET Video Platform, the ICE Broadcast System gives cable operators the ability to carry up to 50 percent more high definition (HDTV) and standard definition (SDTV) digital broadcast signals within their digital broadcast spectrum, without sacrificing video quality.

Probably just a figment of my imagination.
