Humm Joins Vodafone as Regional CEO

Only hours after quitting as the CEO at T-Mobile US Inc. , Philipp Humm has turned up at Vodafone Group plc (NYSE: VOD) with a major European role.

Humm unexpectedly announced his departure from T-Mobile USA Wednesday, leaving the U.S.'s fourth-largest mobile operator in a state of disarray. (See T-Mobile CEO Humm Is Done .)

With the sun not even up over his former empire, Humm has now been named as the CEO of Northern & Central Europe at Vodafone, where he will start work on Oct. 1.

The appointment comes as part of a reorganization at Vodafone, which has created two new operating regions: Northern & Central Europe (which includes Germany, the U.K. and six other markets); and Southern Europe (Italy, Spain and four other markets), where the current head of Vodafone Italy, Paolo Bertoluzzo, will take the helm starting Aug. 1.

Vodafone says the new structure for Europe "will underpin our strategy focused on meeting our customers' long-term needs," though it didn't explain how.

Humm is no stranger to the European mobile services scene, as he was previously chief regional officer, Europe at T-Mobile International AG and CEO at T-Mobile Deutschland GmbH .

In his new role, Humm will be responsible for operations that serve more than 94 million customers, compared with more than 33 million at T-Mobile USA.
