A big crowd gathered at The Cable Center in Denver for the 2013 edition of Light Reading's annual Cable Next-Gen IP Strategies conference.

This year, the focus was on the Converged Cable Access Platform (CCAP), the budding Docsis 3.1 platform, cable's IP video and IPv6 transitions and the industry's evolving mobile broadband strategy.

Not in focus for this shot: Our camera. But, as you'll see in the slideshow ahead, we eventually figured it out.

Comcast's Jorge Salinger arrived early to put some finishing touches on his keynote presentation.

Heavy Reading Senior Analyst Alan Breznick kicks off the event with an update on how cable is stacking up against its broadband rivals.

Cox's John Civiletto keynote centered on the operator's overall network strategy, including its decision to expand to 1GHz and how it sees the emerging Docsis 3.1 platform playing an important role down the road.

Heavy Reading's Alan Breznick leads a panel on Docsis 3.1, a CableLabs specification that's aiming to support up to 10Gbit/s in the downstream and 1Gbit/s upstream over cable's hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) plant. He's joined by (seated, from left to right): Comcast's Jorge Salinger; Cox's Jeff Finkelstein; CableLabs's Dan Rice; Cable Europe Labs's Peter Percosan; and Cisco's John Chapman.

Comcast's Jorge Salinger said the MSO is already conducting several 'pilot' field tests of the Converged Cable Access Platform (CCAP) as it gets set to begin deployments later this year.

Just a subtle reminder of who put on the big show...

Session breaks also gave everyone a break from the nuts and bolts talk so they could discuss their NCAA college basketball tournament brackets.

We didn't make Alan hold this up during the whole event.

Miller Time: Discussing the future of CCAP, Docsis 3.0 and cable's other broadband developments can build up a hearty thirst.

CommScope let people come up and touch its new line of CCAP-based gear as it, and other vendors, get ready to tackle a market that could be worth more than $1 billion by 2017, according to Multimedia Research Group (MRG).
