Harvard Picks Thomas Swan
CAMBRIDGE, U.K. -- Thomas Swan Scientific Equipment will shortly complete the installation of a 3x2" CCS GaN MOCVD at Harvard University in the Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Research Center for the group of Professor Charles Lieber. The CSS MOCVD system will be used for the growth of a broad range of nitride based nanoscale photonic and electronic structures. The Harvard group is a leading R&D exponent in growth, fundamental studies and applications of nanowires - nanoscale semiconductor wires. The controlled growth of semiconductor nanowires provides well-defined nanoscale building blocks for the assembly of nano-devices in a way not possible using conventional processing. Using this new approach the Lieber group has demonstrated devices ranging from ultra-high performance nanoscale transistors and integrated logic to the world's smallest light emitting diodes with emission from UV with GaN to near IR with InP nanowires, and recently, injection lasers based on single nanowire active cavities. Professor Lieber states: "We are extremely excited about working with TSSE to bring their state-of-the-art CSS technology to bear on the exploding field of nanotechnology. The TSSE system should provide a quantum jump forward in the controlled growth of GaN based nanowires and next generation nanowire heterostructures, and is thereby expected to enable very substantial advances ranging from high mobility electronic devices to the assembly of multi-color UV-VIS nanowire LED and laser arrays."
