Some big changes are afoot at Javelin Innovations Inc. amid word that two of its top execs have left the startup just weeks after it introduced a new product line of taps and modules that enable MSOs to expand bandwidth above 1GHz.

Oh, and the company is also trying to secure some fresh funding.

Javelin CEO (and former Charter Communications Inc. chief technology officer) Wayne Davis confirmed to Light Reading Cable last week that he and Javelin CTO David Feldman (also a former Charter engineering exec) departed the company at the end of November.

And Javelin has already found a replacement for Davis. Michael Corwin, the former president and COO of Vyyo Inc. (what Javelin was called before it was bought out and went private), will start as Javelin's CEO next week, Javelin's chairman of the board, Jim Chiddix, confirmed on Monday (Dec. 6). Corwin is based in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The changes come into play soon after Javelin came out of stealth mode at the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) Cable-Tec Expo in New Orleans to announce a distribution partnership with Arris Group Inc. and a new line of bandwidth-boosting cable products. Its new portfolio is led by a new set of 1.8GHz modules designed to snap into existing tap housings from Cisco Systems Inc., Motorola Inc., and Regal (an Arris brand) without requiring operators to resize their hybrid fiber/cable (HFC) networks. Javelin has also developed a line of full-fledged 2.8GHz taps for greenfield scenarios. Both products let MSOs add upstream or downstream spectrum for Docsis 3.0, HD programming, video-on-demand (VoD) capacity, and other bandwidth-intensive apps and services.

"Since the company has now developed a new line of products and has a distribution relationship with Arris it was a good time for me personally to take on the next challenge. Javelin will continue to serve the cable industry with [its] line of taps and passives," Davis said via email in response to questions. He and Feldman had been operating Javelin out of Denver. Javelin's R&D and engineering functions are based in Israel.

"Wayne Davis has done a great job getting the company to this point," said Chiddix, a former CTO of Time Warner Cable Inc. who also serves on the Arris board. "He's been a good friend and colleague and we all wish him well in his next role. Dave Feldman is a gifted engineer and we expect to have a continuing consulting relationship with him going forward."

Chiddix also confirmed today that discussions are underway to have Javelin's existing investors contribute more funding. Privately held Javelin hasn't disclosed its full list of financial backers, but Davidi Gilo, the founder and former chairman of Vyyo who helped take the company private for about $45 million, is among that group. Chiddix also shot down speculation from multiple industry sources that Javelin may attempt to sell its assets to Arris, which serves as Javelin's exclusive reseller for North America and Latin America.

"There's been no discussion of an exit," Chiddix said.
