10:25 AM Santa (a.k.a. Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft) brings free WiFi to planes, airports, hotels, and Times Square

10:25 AM -- If you end up stranded in the airport in your holiday travels this year, the wait might not be so bad -- Google is offering free WiFi in 47 airports today through January 15, 2010.
In partnership with airports and WiFi providers like Boingo and Advanced Wireless Group, Google will offer the service in airports like Orlando, Las Vegas, and Baltimore (for a full list of airports, which, unfortunately for me, doesn't include LGA, click here). And, as part of the initiative, Burbank and Seattle airports will offer airport-wide free WiFi "indefinitely."
Google had also said last month it would offer free WiFi on all Virgin America flights this holiday season.
Google isn't the only one with the holiday spirit, however. Yahoo will offer free WiFi in New York's Times Square, calling it "the latest literal expression of Yahoo’s promise to be at the center of people’s online lives."
The search giants may have been inspired by the success of Microsoft's recent free WiFi initiative. Since September, Microsoft, along with JiWire, has offered free WiFi in hotels and airports across the country -- on the condition that users make at least one Bing search.
In other news:
Amazon has released a new free application that allows users to view Kindle e-books on their PCs the same way they would on a Kindle or iPhone. (This capability is already available for Sony eReader titles.) A Mac version is still on the way.
CBS has picked up a comedy project based on a popular Twitter feed called "[****] My Dad Says." The feed, which currently has more than 700,000 followers, was started by 29-year-old Justin Halpern in August, chronicling observations from his 73-year-old father, such as "You worry too much. Eat some bacon... What? No, I got no idea if it'll make you feel better, I just made too much bacon."
Halpern will now co-write and co-produce the series with Patrick Schumacker, and Will & Grace creators David Kohan and Max Mutchnick will exec produce. Obviously, as The Hollywood Reporter explains, the project's title will change if it makes it on air.
