MADRID, Spain and SAN FRANCISCO -- FON announced today that it has launched its newly designed La Fonera wireless router worldwide, enabling consumers around the globe to set up their own wireless access point at home. The tiny router -- it measures just 3 inches by 3.7 inches and is less than an inch thick -- is being offered for $5 for those who agree to share their wireless access with consumers seeking WiFi in their area. In turn, FON customers -- or "Foneros", as they are known -- can use any FON wireless access point around the globe for free.

FON also announced that, in support of its commitment to grow the WiFi community from coast to coast in the United States, it will host two events in New York and San Francisco in the coming month. At these events, the company will give away routers for FREE to citizens, cafes and other small businesses that want WiFi access today and are not willing to wait for municipal WiFi to come to these cities. The recipients of the routers will "promise" to share their access with others in their community, in return for free access at all FON access points. FON intends to host similar events in major cities across the US in the coming year.
