Acme Eyes the Enterprise

Acme Packet Inc. (Nasdaq: APKT) is expanding its ambitions to include enterprise and contact center customers, the company announced today.

Acme, the leading session border controller (SBC) vendor in the service provider space, says it has begun tailoring its gear for Fortune 2000 companies and contact centers that want to enable voice-over-IP (VOIP) services. (See Acme Targets Enterprise.)

Those customers are increasingly moving to IP from TDM services and are looking to connect disparate "islands" of offices using VOIP services, says Kevin Mitchell, Acme Packet's director of solutions marketing.

"The market is maturing in terms of its need for SBCs. We're being pulled into the market by enterprises and service provider customers who want to offer SIP trunking to their customers," he says.

Enterprise-minded features for Acme's Net-Net SBCs will include enhanced security, session control, and reporting. But, in general, Mitchell says the features available for the service provider market are largely applicable to the enterprise market.

With the announcement that it's targeting the enterprise and contact center markets, Acme also named two customers that will be using its SBCs in their networks.

Thing5, a provider of voice and data messaging services for the hospitality industry, will be deploying Acme Packet SBCs to support VOIP services in the La Quinta and Extended Stay hotel chains.

Echopass, which provides hosted contact center solutions, is deploying Acme's products in its San Francisco and Salt Lake City data centers to support VOIP-based services.

Acme has been active in pitching to enterprises for the past year and has won customers through direct sales and channel partners, Mitchell says. Those partners include both equipment vendors and service providers that want to offer SIP trunking and hosted VOIP services.
