Also in today's EMEA regional roundup: European M&A puts brakes on Liberty Global; Swisscom's data-security mess; Maroc Telecom numbers hit by tax bill.

  • The landlocked Balkan country of Macedonia has become the first in Europe to boast an all-IP network, courtesy of the Deutsche Telekom AG (NYSE: DT) subsidiary Makedonski Telekomunikacii . The operator began migrating all the 290,000 fixed lines under its control in October 2011, in a project that forms part of Deutsche Telekom's long-term vision of a pan-European all-IP network. For more details, see this press release. (See Deutsche Telekom: A Software-Defined Operator.)

  • Liberty Global Inc. (Nasdaq: LBTY) saw fourth-quarter sales grow 71% to US$4.47 billion and losses narrow to $121.2 million in a set of results which, reports Bloomberg, fell short of analysts' estimates. Liberty has been looking to increase its presence in Europe, not least through last month's acquisition of Ziggo B.V. , the Dutch broadband provider, for €4.9 billion euros ($6.7 billion). (See Euronews: Rivals Set for Cable Asset Battle and Liberty Global to Buy Ziggo for €10B.)

  • Swisscom AG (NYSE: SCM) has got itself into a pickle on the thorny issue of data security, or lack of it. Back in December it was granted an injunction that stopped a Swiss newspaper group, NZZ, from publishing details of confidential customer data (more than a terabyte's worth) that had landed in its lap after being stolen from Swisscom offices. Now, that injunction has been lifted, so Swisscom potentially faces some of that data, or stories relating to that data, being splashed across the pages of the Swiss press. Check out Swisscom's take on the saga here.

  • Maroc Telecom , which Vivendi agreed in November to sell to UAE's Etisalat , has posted full-year profits down 17.4% at 5.54 billion Moroccan dirhams ($672 million), reports Reuters. A hefty tax charge was partly to blame, claimed the company's chairman. (See Etisalat to Buy Vivendi's 53% Stake in Maroc Telecom.)

  • Sweden's TeliaSonera AB (Nasdaq: TLSN) has appointed a new chief commercial officer. Hélène Barnekow, who was most recently head of Worldwide Field & Partner Marketing at EMC Corp. (NYSE: EMC) in Boston, slides her feet under her new desk on April 1.

  • Orange (NYSE: FTE) has teamed up with Visa to announce the launch of Orange Cash, an NFC-based mobile payments app, in the French cities of Caen and Strasbourg. The app is based on a prepaid account that customers can top up via any debit or credit bank card.

On the other hand, Horizon TV did reach 500,000 customers. And that is a real achievement. So not all bad news for Liberty and Malone.

    Liberty Global results
Not the best week for John Malone, eh Paul? His Liberty Global posts disappointing earnings results while his Charter Communications gets outflanked for TWC by Comcast. Almost makes you want to feel sorry for the guy, right? Well, not really.
