Ericsson Roams on IPv6

STOCKHOLM -- Ericsson and TeliaSonera have successfully demonstrated IPv6 services over a commercial GPRS network in an international roaming scenario.

The demonstration shows that IPv6 services can be supported in a commercial mobile infrastructure, even when roaming, using automated IP tunneling. This can be seen as a stepping-stone toward native IPv6 networks and services including peer-to-peer applications.

An IPv6-enabled laptop with a Sony Ericsson GPRS PCMCIA was used to set up a connection through a commercial GPRS network in Belgium to the home network at TeliaSonera in Sweden. The laptop client automatically set up an IPv6-in-IPv4 tunnel using Intra-Site Automatic Tunnel Addressing Protocol (ISATAP) to TeliaSonera's IPv6 test mobile network, where IPv6 application servers are located and connectivity to the IPv6 Internet is provided.

"This is a joint effort between Ericsson and TeliaSonera," says Håkan Eriksson, Vice President & General Manager, Research and Development at Ericsson. "We are building on our relationship from IPv6 standardization and we will gain experience for peer-to-peer mobile services as well as for the introduction of the complete IPv6 based IMS."

"This joint demonstration over TeliaSonera commercial GPRS network shows our ability to introduce new commercial services based on IPv6 over the existing IPv4 domain," says Håkan Dahlström, Managing Director, Network & Productions, Mobile Network at TeliaSonera. "This can also be regarded as a first milestone towards full IPv6 capability in Mobile and Wireless networks."

Understanding the full experience of women in technology requires starting at the collegiate level (or sooner) and studying the technologies women are involved with, company cultures they're part of and personal experiences of individuals.

During this WiC radio show, we will talk with Nicole Engelbert, the director of Research & Analysis for Ovum Technology and a 23-year telecom industry veteran, about her experiences and perspectives on women in tech. Engelbert covers infrastructure, applications and industries for Ovum, but she is also involved in the research firm's higher education team and has helped colleges and universities globally leverage technology as a strategy for improving recruitment, retention and graduation performance.

She will share her unique insight into the collegiate level, where women pursuing engineering and STEM-related degrees is dwindling. Engelbert will also reveal new, original Ovum research on the topics of artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, security and augmented reality, as well as discuss what each of those technologies might mean for women in our field.
