1:00 PM -- BT Group plc (NYSE: BT; London: BTA) is still banging away at trying to make Fusion work in the U.K. After more than two years, the dualmode, GSM/WiFi, fixed/mobile convergence service has just about 50,000 customers. Now BT is cooking up a next-gen Fusion with new BlackBerry-like devices that will be introduced in the next few weeks.

"These devices are similar to BlackBerries and so our strategy is to make broadband more mobile than ever," said a BT spokeswoman in an emailed statement. "It also makes sense as consumers are increasingly using sites such as Facebook and MySpace and so want access to these sites wherever they are."

She would not reveal further details about the handsets, such as whether they will use UMA technology.

"Fusion is very much alive and kicking," she said.

But is Fusion really a service that should be revived?
