GigaSpaces Spins Off Cloudify as Standalone Company

GigaSpaces Technologies is spinning off its Cloudify division into its own, standalone company that will focus specifically on network functions virtualization (NFV), as well as management and orchestration of cloud applications for enterprises.

The two companies are already functioning as separate entities although a formal split is slated for a little later this year, Nati Shalom, the CTO and founder of Cloudify, wrote in an email to Enterprise Cloud News prior to Thursday's announcement.

"Practically speaking, we are already operating as a separate company with different sales staff, marketing, R&D, website, etc.," Shalom wrote. "However, the regulatory approval should be completed between the end of Q3 and mid-Q4."

When the split is complete, Cloudify will be a self-owned, private company with about 60 employees. Shalom noted that a permanent CEO will be named when the spinoff is complete later this year.

In a July 27 statement, the two companies noted that this spinoff has been in the works since 2016. Shalom noted that Cloudify's financial performance over the last six months helped make the final decision.

"We're announcing it now because we experienced significant Cloudify growth and exceeded our target revenue for H1 of 2017," Shalom wrote. "Based on this success, the Cloudify management and board voted to move forward with the transaction, and allow the company to accelerate the current growth pattern."

As a standalone firm, Cloudify plans to focus on cloud computing in the enterprise, as well as with carriers, telecoms and service providers. The company currently works with private cloud developers, including OpenStack and VMware, as well as the big three public cloud platforms: Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google's Cloud Platform.

Cloudify has also started to work with various container technologies, including the Google-backed Kubernetes, as part of its management and orchestration offerings.

The company uses the open source Topology and Orchestration Specification for Cloud Applications (TOSCA) language to build its platform and to connect hybrid clouds to the networking layer. Cloudify is also part of the Apache Project ARIA, which looks to accelerate TOSCA adoption in the enterprises, as well as with telcos.

After the spinoff, GigaSpaces will continue to focus on its in-memory offerings, which are also based on open source software.
