TiVo & TW Cable Headed for Court Clash

December 04, 2012 | Jeff Baumgartner |

Welcome to today's broadband and cable news roundup.

  • TiVo Inc. and Time Warner Cable Inc. appear to be headed for a court showdown after a federal judge in Texas declined to toss out TiVo's patent infringement claims against the cable operator, Law360 reports. TiVo alleges that TW Cable is violating two patents by distributing three set-top/DVRs made by Motorola Mobility LLC. TiVo previously settled similar suits against Verizon Communications Inc. and AT&T Inc. and is still duking it out with Cisco Systems Inc.. • Cablevision Systems Corp. has launched its Optimum App on select Android devices, extending the reach of a platform that delivers the MSO's live TV lineup to tablets and smartphones that are within reach of the subscriber's home Wi-Fi network. The app, already supported on the iOS platform, the Kindle Fire and PC Web browsers, also lets customers use the devices as fancy remote controls and manage DVR settings.

  • Ensequence Inc. and Sony Corp. have struck a multi-year deal to offer clickable banners, trivia, games, polls and other interactive apps on connected Sony TVs, in the latest attempt by a TV maker to squeeze more revenues out of the boob tube. The deal calls for Sony to embed Ensequence's platform software on all Sony connected TVs starting in the first quarter of 2013. Sony will also offer the software, which uses auto content recognition (ACR) technology to trigger the apps, as an update on its 2011 and 2012 TV models.

  • Multiscreen video gear vendor Elemental Technologies Inc. (ETI) says its customer base has doubled to more than 250 this year, and that its year-on-year revenues are poised to grow by more than 200 percent. Privately held Elemental, which counts Comcast Corp. as a customer, didn't provide any specific figures, but this estimate from Inc.com suggests that the vendor will pull in US$20 million in 2012, and more than $30 million in 2013. • Universal Sports Network is relocating its production and broadcast operations from Southern California to corporate cousin's Comcast Media Center (CMC) in Centennial, Colo. Universal Sports, a multi-screen "destination for Olympic and endurance sports programming," will be fully operational at the CMC at the start of 2013. The move will create 44 new jobs in the area, said the network, a partnership between NBC Sports and InterMedia Partners LP.
