Aethra Picks Ikanos VDSL2April 19, 2005 | Post a comment
no ratings FREMONT, Calif. -- Ikanos Communications, a leading developer of Fiber-FastTM broadband solutions, today announced that Aethra SpA, a leader in the global telecommunications market, is using the Ikanos CleverConnect™ 600 Very-High-Bit-Rate Digital Subscriber Line 2 (VDSL2) chipset in its next-generation Home Gateway platform. Carriers deploying the new Ikanos-based Aethra residential gateway (RG) platform will now be able to successfully compete with cable and satellite providers by utilizing both upstream and downstream bandwidth capabilities to deliver high-value triple-play services. The Ikanos-based Aethra RG will also arm carriers with the bandwidth necessary to satisfy growing consumer demand for interactive services such as interactive gaming, video conferencing, peer-to-peer file sharing and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). “The Ikanos VDSL2 chipset, which supports multiple voice, video, and data applications, further enhances Aethra’s product portfolio to include complete solutions for the digital home,” said Marco Viezzoli, CEO of Aethra SpA. “As carriers migrate to a pure VDSL2 network, consumers will be able to take advantage of interactive applications, including gaming, VoIP and video surveillance — all of which require more upstream bandwidth than legacy DSL offers today.” Ikanos’ CleverConnect 600 is a single-port, standards-compliant solution that enables equipment vendors to develop high-performance Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) such as modems, bridges, routers, VoIP gateways, and residential gateways. The chipset supports VDSL2, VDSL, and VDSL Long Range (VLR™) and can be deployed in any carrier network worldwide. “Carriers worldwide view VDSL/VDSL2 as the key technology required to deliver triple-play services to consumers,” said Dean Grumlose, vice president of marketing at Ikanos Communications. “Carriers must consider the bandwidth requirements not only for today’s consumer applications, but also for tomorrow’s if they are to successfully fend off competitive threats from both cable and satellite providers. The VDSL2-based Aethra home gateway will enable carriers to offer high bandwidth services now as well as give them the flexibility to offer additional value-added services in the future.”
