Time Warner Deploys VPLS With Juniper

SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- Juniper Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq:JNPR) and Time Warner Telecom (Nasdaq:TWTC) today announced that the Juniper Networks M-series Multiservice Routing Platform is a foundation for Time Warner Telecom's new extended metro Ethernet services, including Multi-point Extended Native LAN, which is the largest Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) deployment in the U.S. The extended metro Ethernet service connects the local capabilities of Time Warner Telecom's Native LAN service to other cities around the country. It is now available in the 44 U.S. metropolitan areas that Time Warner Telecom serves with its powerful fiber networks.

Time Warner Telecom leveraged its installed base of M10 and M20 routing platforms to deliver its new VPLS service using IP/MPLS to provide a multipoint-to-multipoint Ethernet service between multiple enterprise sites in geographically dispersed locations. This is the first large scale inter-metro native LAN service deployed that enables customers in different cities throughout the U.S. to appear to be on the same Ethernet-based Local Area Network. This can be achieved because VPLS utilizes the scalability and resiliency of IP/MPLS to carry transparent LAN services between metropolitan areas, which standard Ethernet equipment cannot support. Time Warner Telecom also uses Juniper Networks Gigabit Ethernet IQ PICs to provide rich per VLAN Quality of Service (QoS) to support prioritized voice, video and other mission critical traffic over their network.

Last month at SUPERCOMM, Time Warner Telecom announced that First Citizens Bank, based in Raleigh, N.C. is using its fully meshed Multi-point Extended Native LAN service to connect a main bank location in Charlotte and a back-office location in Columbia, S.C., with its headquarters in Raleigh. The service transmits financial and other data transactions seamlessly among the three locations over 10 and 20 Mbps Ethernet ports, which are scalable to 100 Mbps.
